Bus Types

Daejeon has four main categories of city bus, each color-coded and designed for different travel needs.

Trunk & Branch Bus

간선·지선버스 (Ganseon / Jiseon)

The backbone of the city bus network, connecting major hubs, subway stations, and residential areas across the urban core. Most visitors will use these the most.

Routes: 100s–900s

Express Bus

급행버스 (Geupaeng)

Runs along major arterial roads skipping 1–2 stops at a time for faster travel. Great for longer distances across the city. Uses the same flat fare as regular buses.

Routes: Prefixed with 급행

Outer District Bus

외곽버스 (Oegwak)

Serves the rural outskirts of Daejeon, including mountain parks and suburban villages. Less frequent than trunk routes — check timetables in advance.

Routes: 10s–90s (2-digit)

BRT / Metro Bus

BRT·광역버스 (BRT / Gwangyeok)

Bus Rapid Transit running in dedicated bus lanes, mostly along major corridors connecting Daejeon with Sejong City. Faster and more reliable on busy roads

B1, 1001, 1002

Village Bus

마을버스 (Maul Bus)

Small minibuses operated by Yuseong-gu district for local neighborhood connections. Covers areas that larger buses can't reach easily.

Routes 1, 3, and 5.

Fares

Fares are charged as a flat rate regardless of distance on most routes. Rates below are current as of January 2024.

No cash on buses. Since September 2022, all Daejeon city buses (including BRT) operate card-only. You must have a T-money card or compatible transit card to board. Exact cash cannot be accepted.

Passenger Age T-money Card Cash / Bank Transfer
Adult 19 years & older ₩1,500 ₩1,700
Youth / Teen 13–18 years ₩750 ₩900
Child 6–12 years ₩350 ₩400
Infant Under 6 Free Free

Daejeon operates a free transfer system. If you tap out when alighting and tap in on the next bus or subway within 30 minutes, no additional fare is charged. Always tap your card when getting off! Failing to tap out means your next boarding could charge you the maximum distance fare.

How to Ride

Getting on a Daejeon bus is straightforward once you know the process. Follow these steps.

Plan Your Route

Use Naver Maps, Kakao Maps, or the official Daejeon Bus app to find your route. Search by destination — the app shows bus numbers, stops, and estimated arrival times in real time.

Find Your Stop

Bus stops display route numbers on a pole or shelter. Electronic boards at major stops show next arrival times in Korean (and English at key landmarks, government offices, and subway stations).

Signal the Bus

Raise your hand clearly as the bus approaches. Korean buses will pass you if you don't signal, even if you're standing at the stop. Make eye contact with the driver and wave.

Board & Tap In

Board through the front door. Touch your T-money card to the card reader near the driver. A beep and green light confirms payment. Move toward the back to make room.

Press the Bell

Press the yellow or red stop-request button near your seat before your stop. The bus announces stops in Korean (and English at major landmarks). GPS-based apps show your real-time location.

Alight & Tap Out

Exit through the middle or rear doors. Tap your card on the reader near the exit door — this is required for free transfers and fare calculation on distance-based routes.

Cards & Payment

Cash is not accepted on Daejeon buses. Here's what you can use and where to get a card.

T-money Card

Recommended

Korea's universal transit card. Works on buses, subways, and taxis nationwide. Rechargeable at any convenience store (CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, Emart24). Get one at Daejeon Station, the airport, or any convenience store for about ₩3,000.

Mobile T-money

Available via Samsung Pay, Apple Pay (on supported Korean iPhones), Kakao Pay, and Naver Pay. Set up a virtual T-money card in the app and recharge digitally. Works with NFC-enabled phones.

Recharging

Top up your T-money card at the front counter of any convenience store, subway ticket machines at Daejeon Metro stations, and some ATMs. Minimum reload is ₩1,000. You can also check your remaining balance at these machines.

Foreign Cards

Most overseas credit/debit cards (Visa, Mastercard) are not accepted directly on buses. However, some Korean bank travel cards and the Wowpass prepaid card work as T-money. Check before you travel.

Good to Know

Practical tips from people who've navigated Daejeon's bus system as first-timers.

English Announcements at Major Stops

Buses announce stops in both Korean and English when passing government offices, tourist attractions, and major subway interchange stations. Elsewhere, use a map app to track your location.

Outer Routes Run Infrequently

Outer district (green) buses to parks like Gyejoksan or Daecheong Dam can run every 40–60 minutes. Always check the timetable in advance via the Daejeon Bus app or Naver Maps before heading to remote stops.

Transfer to the Metro for Free

Daejeon has one subway line (Metro Line 1) running from Banseok to Sintan-ri. If you tap off the bus and enter the subway within 30 minutes, no extra fare is charged — a useful trick for longer journeys.

Late Night Service is Limited

Most bus routes end service around 10:30–11:30 PM. There is no 24-hour bus network. Plan your last bus carefully, or budget for a Kakao Taxi (KakaoT app) for late night travel.

Daejeon Station ↔ Key Attractions

From Daejeon Station (대전역), you can reach Expo Science Park, KAIST, and Yuseong Hot Springs by bus. The BRT route from Dunsan (둔산) connects the government district quickly without transferring.

Apps & Resources

These apps will make navigating Daejeon's bus network much easier, even without Korean language skills.

Naver Maps (네이버 지도)

Best all-round navigation app for Korea. Shows real-time bus arrival, walking routes, subway, and estimated journey times. English interface available. Works offline for basic maps.

English Support

KakaoMap (카카오맵)

Alternative to Naver Maps with excellent transit routing. Also integrates with KakaoTaxi for when you miss the last bus. Real-time bus positions are very accurate in Daejeon.

English Support

Daejeon Bus App (대전버스)

Official city bus app with real-time arrival info, route search, and timetables. Primarily in Korean, but the route/arrival data is very reliable and easy to read numerically.

Korean

Google Maps

Covers transit routing in Daejeon reasonably well. Less accurate for live bus positions than Naver/Kakao, but great for initial planning and if you're already familiar with the interface.

English Support

T-money App

Manage your T-money balance, view transaction history, and reload your card digitally. Pair with mobile payment apps for a fully cashless experience on public transit.

Korean / Limited English

KakaoT (카카오택시)

Not a bus app, but essential backup for late nights or when buses are too infrequent. Tap into a taxi anywhere in Daejeon, pay by card. English app available.
